Our dynamic small group Fall and Winter Workshops offer age appropriate activities that are especially designed to foster creativity, promote self-expression and develop a young child’s imagination.

Curriculum is designed to support the cognitive development of early learners through hands-on engagement. Critical thinking skills are nurtured through cause and effect interactive discovery learning techniques using the arts, dramatic play, squishing, sorting, mixing, swirling, collecting and building.

Our workshops are presented by experienced educators with a talent for piquing children’s natural curiosity. Young learners may participate in social development class and for Home School families, our workshops are a perfect supplement to the academic school year.

Wonderseum
a Reggio-Emilia Inspired Preschool Environment  just for 4 year-olds

*Students must be potty trained and be 4 years old by the start of the semester. Wonderseum is not designed for drop-in attendance.

The Woodlands Children’s Museum is excited to share the news of our preschool environment, The Wonderseum. Now, in its third year, this program is designed specifically for 4-year-olds and is truly a unique gem in The Woodlands community. The Wonderseum is a Pre-Kindergarten educational environment combined with all the opportunities the museum has to offer.

The Reggio Emilia inspired preschool environment focuses on natural materials and encourages children to collaborate in their own education and curriculum. Our goal is for a child to develop a love of learning and confidence in their own curiosity that will carry them through their entire education career. The curriculum is a balance of pre-Kindergarten skills as well as following the children’s own interests through open-ended, project based experiences.

In addition to their classroom environment children have plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning within the museum. Children have special access to the museum’s exhibits, to experience our floor programs like Shadow Puppet Theatre, create art projects in The Muse, and attend countless events like fire truck visits and animal encounters.

“Creating the Wonderseum experience is a natural progression of the workshops we have offered here at the museum for many years,” stated Angela Colton, Executive Director of The Woodlands Children’s Museum.“It is a unique opportunity to serve the 4-year-olds in this community year round and provide them with a learning environment inspired by the children and museum itself.”

Little Picassos for 2 & 3 year-olds meets WEDNESDAYS

2 year-olds, 9:30am-10:15am
3 year-olds, 10:30am-11:15am

Twos and threes explore art as a learning experience and are more interested in “doing” art than making finished products. During the “process”, twos and threes discover their own independence, as well as delighting in the joy of exploring and creating. Using a variety of mediums to create mini masterpieces and stimulate artistic imaginations, toddler and grown-up share the “process” of art as a stimulus to engage discovery and becoming familiar with various art mediums, such as painting, collage, fiber art and building with clay while squishing, mixing, tearing and swirling. Leave the “messy” with us, but painting clothes are recommended.

RobotiKs and Beyond, creating with technology for 7-10 year-olds meets THURSDAYS

Using the LEGO® Mindstorms® Education platform, EV3 introduces young engineers to the basic fundamentals of building and mechanical principles by engaging and motivating them to design, build and program their robots, using motors, sensors, gears, wheels, axles and various technical components. While gaining a better understanding of how technology can work in real-world applications, the EV3 curriculum develops creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

Coding is done by dragging and dropping icons into a line to form commands, allowing students to create, build and then mechanically manipulate their “rover” with space-themed missions and solutions.

The second session introduces young engineers to LEGO® Education SPIKE™ by combining colorful LEGO building elements, easy-to-use hardware, and an intuitive drag-and-drop coding language based on Scratch. This curriculum engages students through playful learning activities to think critically and solve complex problems, regardless of their learning level. From easy-entry projects to limitless creative design possibilities, including the option to explore text-based coding with Python, SPIKE helps students discover the essential STEAM and 21st century skills needed to become the innovative minds of tomorrow… while having fun!

SEPTEMBER THEME: All about Me
OCTOBER THEME: Creepy Creatures
NOVEMBER THEME: Places and Spaces

SEPTEMBER Theme: All about Me

9/16
Children begin with the interactive task of tracing each other onto large butcher block paper, Creating faces, hair, clothing and other embellishments that spark interest and assist in expressing themselves, providing an exploration of different mediums such as paint, yarn, markers, feathers,
recycled paper and more.

9/30
Playing dress up truly inspires creative imagination. Children delight in seeing pictures of themselves, set up in collage format and ready to be dressed up, providing another exploratory environment using different mediums and textured materials.

OCTOBER Theme: Creepy Creatures

10/14
While being committed to a primarily black and white color scheme and using their imagination to consider all the “friendly” monsters they may have seen in books and movies to prompt how their monster will “look”, children create monsters using rubbings to create the textured paper and then cutting out shapes to “create” their texture monsters.

10/28
Prompting children to investigate “insects and bugs in the garden” using stock images, images from magazines, insect and bug themed books and exploring various collage materials, children draw, cut, arrange, embellish and create their own insects and bugs around a garden theme.

NOVEMBER Theme: Places and Spaces

11/18
Embracing art as open-ended play and using table top sized recycled boxes, children paint and then embellish the boxes with torn scraps of paper, magazine scraps, and more exploratory mediums, while using their imagination to create houses, barns, sheds, city blocks, work places, theatres or
whatever else is inspiring their artistic dialogue.
