Giving Tuesday Now is a global day of giving and unity that will take place on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.
At The Woodlands Children’s Museum, staff have been working hard while the museum is closed to give back to the community and offer children and families a sense of normalcy and connection while at home.
“It’s important to connect with each other and come together on behalf of our communities
during this challenging time,” stated Angela Colton, Executive Director of The Woodlands
Children’s Museum. “Although we cannot welcome guests and ‘play together’ right now, we
want families to know we are thinking of them and trying to offer simple ways to engage and
connect.”
While closed, staff have created a series of videos that follow the weekly Storybook Theater and
Shadow Puppet Theater activities typically offered at the museum. Posting two videos each
week on Facebook and Instagram, stories have been carefully chosen to celebrate favorite
holidays and events such as Easter, Earth Day, and Springtime. Children can enjoy the
familiarity of the weekly storytimes and perhaps read along at home with a parent or older
sibling. The storytimes can also be viewed on the museum’s website, along with a list of at-
home activities and art projects compiled from children’s museums across the country.
To help cover expenses while the museum is closed, The Woodlands Children’s Museum is also
participating in Giving Tuesday Now, a global day of giving and unity set for Tuesday, May 5,
2020.
“Giving Tuesday is a global initiative typically celebrated on the first Tuesday after
Thanksgiving” stated Colton. “This year, due to the unprecedented need, nonprofit
organizations are asking for support mid-year to continue providing important services in their
communities. Without funding, it is difficult to maintain our programs and plan for future
events.”
Support from the community is requested to help ensure that the museum is ready to open again
as soon as possible. During Giving Tuesday Now, The Woodlands Children’s Museum is
introducing online gift cards and new membership opportunities. Families who purchase a new
annual membership, renew a membership, or buy a gift membership between May 1-31 will
receive a bonus month, with the membership expiring 13 months after the date of purchase. In
addition, individuals who purchase or renew membership during this time will also be entered
to win a $50 gift certificate. The gift certificate can be used in the museum gift shop or may be
applied towards the cost of a workshop, birthday party, or other museum events.
In addition, the museum is offering a new Contributing Membership that includes a 12-month
pass to the museum along with additional benefits that help support the museum’s mission.
Contributing Members can choose a $1,000 tier (“Museum Patron”) or a $500 tier (“Friend of
the Museum”). A Contributing Membership is designed not only for current visitors, but also
museum “alumni” who may have visited the museum when their children were younger,
grandparents, or other members of the community who support early childhood learning and the
importance of play.
