Set sail for an adventure on Pirate ‘n Mermaid Day\, Saturday\, September 21\, 2024\, from 10:00am until 2:00pm. During this event that celebrates the magical world of pirates and mermaids\, the museum’s exhibits will be open for play\, including The Muse art bar where children can create a unique pirate hat or mermaid mask. In the Light Lab\, children can engage in hands-on opportunities that explore color and shape recognition through sorting and matching of nautical themed objects. \n“On Pirate ‘n Mermaid Day\, we encourage children in our community to dress up and follow their hearts and believe in the power of love and giving\,” stated Angela Colton\, the museum’s Executive Director. “These values are expressed in the well-known Disney movie The Little Mermaid\, which is a fairy tale that was originally published in 1837 as part of a collection of stories by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.” \nOn this special day\, children can make fish lips and strike a pose for a photo opportunity with Princess Ariel at 10:30am\, 11:30am\, 12:30pm\, and 1:30pm. In addition\, there will be Pirate meet and greets at 11:30am\, 12:30pm and 1:30pm. During the event\, guests are encouraged to explore the museum with a treasure map and be on the lookout for hidden objects. \nAt 11:00am\, gather for a mermaid-themed reading of Lola: The Bracelet of Courage by Sarah Cullen and Carmen Ellis. In this tale\, Lola the mermaid loses a magical bracelet that helps her feel brave and must seek a new way home through a kelp forest and dark cave. At 1:00pm\, enjoy How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long. Both of these books focus on the family stories and history we all have and share\, and they are a perfect way to pay tribute to Grandparents Day\, which is this Sunday.  Author Carol Gandee Shough will be reading excerpts from her books on stage; and that will be immediately followed by a meet-and-greet\, where she will be selling and signing books until 12:15pm. Ms. Shough grew up in Ohio\, graduating from Ohio State University. She received her MA from The University of Texas at Austin. There she worked at The Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery in art education. She later worked for the Texas House of Representatives and taught history\, art\, and photography with the Department of Defense in Catania\, Sicily. After moving to The Woodlands\, she taught at Lone Star College as adjunct professor of Art History and Art Appreciation. Now retired\, she loves being with friends and family\, especially her five grandchildren. Part of the year is spent on Maui.
